Cenote Ik Kil is in Yucatán, 3 km (1.9 miles) from Chichén Itzá and about 200 km (125 miles) from Cancún. This guide compares every way to get there in 2026, with current costs and travel times, and tells you when to arrive to enjoy the cenote with almost no crowds.

Before you leave: the time difference

Cancún (Quintana Roo) is one hour ahead of Yucatán all year. Cenote Ik Kil opens at 9:00 AM Yucatán time, which is 10:00 AM on a phone still set to Cancún time.

Example: leave Cancún by car at 7:30 AM and you reach Ik Kil around 9:00 AM local time, right at opening.

The best time to arrive: 9:00 AM

Arrive at opening, 9:00 AM. At that hour you’ll have the cenote almost to yourself. Tour buses arrive between 11:30 AM and 4:00 PM, which is the busiest time. On some days it also gets quieter around 3:00 PM; remember that last entry is 4:00 PM.

Leave Cancún (Cancún time) Arrive at Ik Kil (Yucatán time) Crowds
7:15–7:45 AM 8:45–9:15 AM Minimal: almost yours
8:30–9:30 AM 10:00–11:00 AM Moderate
10:00 AM–12:30 PM 11:30 AM–2:00 PM High: tour-bus hours
1:30 PM Around 3:00 PM Quieter on some days

Times assume driving (about 2.5 hours).

The cenote is open daily 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Last entry 4:00 PM. Visits are limited to 2 hours.

Option 1: Car (rental or your own)

  • Time: about 2.5 hours, ~200 km.
  • Tolls (one way, car): about 530 MXN on the 180D toll highway. That’s about 427 MXN at the Cancún–Valladolid booth and about 100 MXN at the Pisté booth. Rates change; check the exact cost on Mexico’s official SICT “Traza tu Ruta” calculator.
  • Parking at Ik Kil: free.
  • Best for: families, couples and groups of two or more.

Take the 180D toll highway toward Mérida and exit at Chichén Itzá / Pisté. Drive past the archaeological site toward Valladolid and you’ll reach the Ik Kil entrance in a few minutes. The free road (180) is slower, with many towns and speed bumps.

Is it worth it? For two or more people, renting a car is often cheaper than round-trip bus tickets per person plus taxis. It also lets you arrive at 9:00 AM and continue to Chichén Itzá or Valladolid on your own schedule.

Option 2: Maya Train (Tren Maya)

  • Time: about 2 hours from Cancún Aeropuerto station to Chichén Itzá station (in Pisté). The printed timetable looks like 1 hour because of the time zone.
  • Cost: 351 MXN one way on the “Turista México” fare. Since April 2026 there is no separate foreigner fare. Prices can vary by date.
  • Station to Ik Kil: taxi 60–100 MXN, about 10 minutes.
  • Best for: travelers already near the airport, or anyone who wants the train experience.

Keep in mind:

  • Cancún’s station is at the airport, not in the hotel zone. From the hotel zone, add an ADO bus (~120 MXN, ~20 min) or a taxi.
  • There are few departures per day and few afternoon returns. Check schedules and book both ways on the official sales site: reservas.ventaboletostrenmaya.com.mx.

Option 3: Direct ADO bus to Chichén Itzá

  • Time: about 2 h 45 min to 3 h 20 min.
  • Cost: from about 496 MXN one way (varies by season and how early you book).
  • Departs from: ADO Cancún Centro terminal. There is usually one morning departure and one late-afternoon return.
  • Chichén Itzá to Ik Kil: taxi 60–100 MXN, or a colectivo toward Valladolid for 25–35 MXN. Ask to be dropped at Ik Kil.

Check schedules and buy at ado.com.mx.

Option 4: Budget, via Valladolid

  • Time: about 3 to 3.5 hours in total.
  • Cost: ADO or ADO Conecta bus from Cancún to Valladolid (approx. 250–370 MXN), plus a colectivo from Valladolid toward Pisté (approx. 40–60 MXN).

Colectivos from Valladolid toward Pisté drive right past the cenote: ask the driver to drop you at the Ik Kil entrance. They leave when full and take cash only.

Option 5: Organized tour

Day tours from Cancún include hotel pickup and combine several stops. They’re easy, but you follow the group’s schedule: most reach Ik Kil during the busiest hours. Check what each tour includes before you pay.

Tip: guides and tickets

Chichén Itzá’s accredited guides work inside the archaeological site, so hire yours there. On the way in, especially at the Pisté entrance, you may see people offering services or tickets from the roadside: compare prices before paying for anything. And if you bought your ticket somewhere else, check at the ticket office that what you paid matches the published price.
